How Naturopathic herbal extracts
promote healthy joints and relieve
the pain of inflammation
Herbal extract made of multiple herbs have salicylate (or aspirin like)
components. These herbs are used in calming inflammation and reducing chronic
arthritis pain, muscle pain and spasm.
Also herbal extracts will increase
circulation, which tends to reduce arthritis pain. Herbal extracts are
a natural solution for general arthritis pain and joint pain, and also
tension headaches.
Herbal tinctures or liquid extracts are made to concentrate
the active parts of the herbs and are created of base percentages of
alcohol and water. The percentage of alcohol and water is singular to
the herbs used. Some active ingredients are more soluble in water and
others more soluble in alcohol. The herbs are put into the solution (or
solvent), and let to soak for varying amounts of time‘til the activeingredients
have been brought into the alcohol/watersolution. They are filtered, inspected,
and bottled.
The bark of the white willow tree (Salix alba) hasbeen used
in China for hundreds of years as a medicine due to its ability torelieve
joint pain and bring down
fever.
The main ingredient in white willow is salicin, which
the body changes into salicylic acid. The first aspirin (acetylsalicylic
acid) was created from a different salicin containing herb— meadowsweet—butworks
essentially the same way. All aspirin is now chemically made. It’s
not surprising, then, that white willow bark is oft times called "herbalaspirin",
and hasthe same pain relief benefits.
The salicylic acid in white willow bark
brings downthe body's prostaglandins, hormone like compounds which
can cause aches, joint pain, and inflammation. Though white willow bark
takes longer to begin acting than aspirin, it may last longer. And, as
opposed to aspirin, it doesn’t cause stomach bleeding or other
adverse effects. White willow bark may help:
- Relieve chronic and acute arthritis pain,
including headache, neck and joint pain, menstrual cramps, and muscle
aches. The effectiveness of white willow bark for lessening these and
other kinds of discomforts comes from its power to lessen prostaglandin
levels.
- Control arthritis pain.
Some arthritis pain sufferers
using white willow bark have seen reduced swelling and
inflammation, and increased mobility, in the knees,
back, hips, and other joints.
